What We Stand For

Working people deserve good jobs and fair working conditions.

When workers unite, they make the working environment better for everyone. That is why ZCATWU was formed to ensure that there are decent wages, safe workplaces, and decent working hours for all construction workers. Workplace Health and Safety

Given the nature of Construction work which is characterised with working on heights, outdoors, operating heavy machinery and generally being work which demands lots of energy and power. With that in mind, ZCATWU has ensured that the health and safety of its members and all workers in the construction industry of Zimbabwe is of  priority by negotiating for statutes which seek to protect the health and safety of construction workers.

General workers

ZCATWU has full time organisers responsible for national membership organising, servicing and retention across the country and ofices in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru and Mutare. The union also utilises shopstewards for organising at enterprise level.

Better Pay and Benefits

Zimbabwe workers have the right to refuse unsafe work, the right to be informed about hazards in the workplace, and the right to participate in health and safety discussions. Employers must fulfill their obligations to keep workers safe.

Gender Equality

ZCATWU has a role to play in promoting fairness, equality, and freedom from violence for all workers, regardless of age, race, religion, ability, sex, gender identity and gender expression, or sexuality. As Z.C.A.T.W.U we can help to educate and empower our members so that all workplaces are welcoming and inclusive.

Social Protection

ZCATWU leads efforts to improve social protection for workers in the construction industry while they are at work and upon retirement. We negotiate for packages at NEC including non monetary benefits as well as representing the interests of contributors at the Construction Industry Pension Fund (CIPF). Among the social protection packages negotiated by ZCATWU at the CIPF are the low income housing scheme for contributors which has seen more than 2500 construction workers benefiting. the initiative started in harare and would be decentralised to other towns and cities to cover the geographical spheres of our members. ZCATWU has also negotiated for a funeral cover for construction workers at NEC. under the agreement a deceased employees’s funeral costs are covered by the employer. Advocacy efforts for social protection are also being undertaken at national level through engagements with NSSA and policy makers like parliamentarians.
