Our Story

Founded  in 1980

The Zimbabwe Construction and Allied Trade Workers Union (ZCATWU) was formed in 1980 to represent workers in the construction, civil engineering, and concrete products industry. ZCATWU also negotiates wages and conditions of work for all workers in the sector at the National Employment Council for the Construction Industry of Zimbabwe (NECCIZ)

Locally ZCATWU is affiliated with the Zimbabwe Congress Of Trade Unions and at the regional and global level it’s affiliated to the Building and Wood Workers International (BWI)

After every five years, the union holds its congress to elect the president, vice president, treasurer, and national executive members who are drawn from branches where the union has members

The elected leadership i.e National Executive Committee shall be responsible for running the affairs of the union in between congress periods being guided by the Strategic Plan adopted at the congress

the union has an operational department occupied by full-time staff members, the departments are as follows: 1 – Administration, 2- Organising, 3- Education and Health and Safety  and 4- membership

We build our workforce by fostering pride, performance, and professionalism in the trades, and by supporting training that prepares our members for life-long career opportunities. We also strive to ensure that the construction industry offers the most financially satisfying and personally rewarding career path open to young Zimbabweans.

We strengthen our industry by providing solutions that meet the challenges of our changing, energy-conscious world, and by delivering unmatched value for contractors and owners—proving that developing a partnership with Z.C.A.T.W.U is the best investment they will ever make

“Our objective is to leverage our rich history and experience to build strategic relationships across the unionized construction and allied workers industry, to use our knowledge and expertise to improve public policy, and to help our members negotiate competitive labour agreements.”
